On Tour: In The Clubs

When KISS played their debut concert at the Coventry in Queens, New York, on Tuesday January 30, 1973, they already had plenty of original material from which to construct their set. Most of their songs had been worked on during late-1972 before Ace Frehley's addition to the band in late-December. Where various dates have been thrown around throughout the years, Lydia Criss has been adamant that Ace had joined the band by Christmas 1972. In fact, with the timing of the two Village Voice ads, it seems to make the most sense. The band, then a trio (following Peter Criss' addition), had performed a showcase for Epic Records towards the end of November 1972, just a week before Paul placed the ad for a lead guitarist. That showcase may well have been final nail in Wicked Lester's coffin and birth of a new band, but the material performed can be considered the holy trinity of KISS' musical catalog: "Deuce," "Strutter," and "Firehouse."
