On Tour: "The Farewell (Continues)"

The international leg of the "Farewell" tour was overshadowed by the drama facing the band in the conference rooms with lawyers. Both Peter Criss and Ace Frehley had signed five-year contracts for the KISS reunion in 1996 and that period had expired. While Ace was willing to continue, at least for the time-being, Peter had entered into negotiations to extend his contract. His dissatisfaction with his situation had led to his modification of his makeup design with the additional tear during the latter states of the U.S. tour in the fall of 2000. Peter was aggrieved at the situation commenting, "It is unfortunate that Gene and Paul chose to terminate their association with me for the Japan and Australia tour dates. I am healthy and will truly miss performing... We were in the middle of negotiating and there was an offer taken off the table" (AP). Eric Singer returned to the band and was installed in the Catman's costume and makeup setting the stage for the final era of the band's career. Paul was adamantly against creating a new makeup design for Eric: "This is the KISS show. This is the show that people have loved and we've been known for. I don't see a reason to change it... There's no reason to not give people the look that they're expecting" (The Advertiser). Photos of Eric with his hair dyed black and newly extended, in makeup and costume, were first released on February 14...
